How to make flower polymer clay earrings

How I Make My Handmade Flower Polymer Clay Earrings – Step by Step

Here's a behind-the-scenes look at how I bring these floral beauties to life!

How I Make My Handmade Floral Polymer Clay Earrings

Step 1: I start by mixing custom colors from blocks of Fimo polymer clay. I love Fimo because of its color stability, the colors stay vibrant after baking and don’t darken or shift much in the oven. It's also less brittle than many other clays, so once baked, it's strong and durable, especially for delicate parts like thin flower petals. I enjoy working with soft, natural tones, and in this particular piece, I chose a blue base for the earrings, with red and dark purple for the flowers.

Step 2: To prepare the clay, I first knead it by hand, then run it through a pasta machine to condition it thoroughly. This step is essential for achieving a smooth texture and helps prevent cracking later on. Make sure you condition the clay well. :-)

Step 3: For the petals, I use a mix of sculpting tools and my own custom-designed micro petal cutter, which I created with a 3D printer. It helps me shape each petal with precision while still keeping that handmade charm.

Step 4: Once the petals are cut, I flatten and thin them using a dotting tool, then gently shape the edges and tips with a silicone brush to create a natural, lifelike flow. Before assembling, I dust the petals lightly with chalk pastels to add soft gradients and depth, giving them a realistic, hand-painted look. I then layer the petals to form the flowers and use Fimo Liquid Gel to securely bond them together.

Step 5: When the flowers are ready, I place them carefully on a tray and bake them in the oven at 110°C (230°F) for 30 minutes, following the recommended baking instructions for Fimo clay to ensure strength and durability.

Step 6: After baking, I lightly sand the edges and the backs to smooth out any rough spots and give the finished piece a clean, polished look.

Step 7: I then attach the earrings to 316L surgical stainless steel earring posts or hoops using strong jewelry glue, I use E6000 & Loctite Super Glue Gel, they are perfect for securing clay pieces to metal findings like earring posts. They create a strong, flexible bond that holds up over time, even with slight movement. It also dries clear, which is important for a clean finish!

Step 8: Finally, each pair of earrings is packed with love in eco-friendly packaging inside a padded envelope, along with a handwritten thank-you note. Whether it’s a gift or a treat for yourself, I want the experience to feel special from the moment it arrives.
